Sihanouk, Norodom (1922-) King of Cambodia. Typed Letter Signed ("N. Sihanouk") as head of state of Cambodia, Phnompenh, July 17, 1966. An eloquent letter written in the midst of the Vietnam War, adressing the accusations of an American that Sihanouk has misconceptions regarding the role of the USA in southeast Asia.

He writes, "…It seems to me that…you should be much more 'saddened' at the activities of your country in this area and at the root cause of the 'resentments' of our people…." He examines the motivation of the U.S. in staying aloof for the first years of both World Wars, then discusses the "Cold War," and America's "support for France's colonialist 'dirty war' in Indo-China." He admits to the "generosity" of the American people and regrets that "the present US administratin has turned its back on its own liberal traditions to become the symbol of reaction and oppression. No words of mine on this subject could be half as eloquent as the bombs and napalm with which your planes are daily scarring and burning the fields, homes and bodies of the South Vietnamese people. / … we and our neighbours in Indochina did not free ourselves from French colonial rule only to fall under American or any other foreign rule…." He brings up allegations in the U.S. press against Cambodia "aimed at providing the pretext for systematic bombing of our territory," (which did take place in 1969). A fascinating letter! In 1970 Sihanouk would be the victim of a coup d'état. Although he came back into power for a period of time, he went into exile in 1978 when the Vietnamese invaded Cambodia. In 1991 he returned from exile and in 1993 was reinstated as king of Cambodia, but in 1997 he was again ousted from power by his co-premier.

Burke, Edmund (1729-97) British statesman and orator. Autograph Letter Signed ("Edm Burke"), Beconsfield, Jan. 8, 1794, 2 pp + 2 lines, 9 x 7½ in. To an unidentified correspondent, regarding recent events in the French Revolution. He wonders why the French emigrants who escaped to England were not consulted on British policy toward the French. Boldly written, with some show-through; mounting remnants on back blank margin. Very good.

In part: "…perhaps you could not have done much more to prevent the disasters which are likely to fall upon Europe. Toulon is not only a calamitous, but, in my mind, a most disgraceful affair. We really stand in need of men of capacity for matters of the least difficulty. The whole stock of abilities in Europe perhaps is not equal to the demand; but we have resolved not to profit of what there was. I have a strong opinion that Frenchmen are best for French affairs. I have an opinion…that the emigrants have better parts than the people among whom they have taken refuge….I am almost convinced that such is the fact and that we have suffered all that we have suffered in these two campaigns by repelling them, and refusing to consult, and as much as possible in any way to use them, in their own affairs. To this I attribute…our shameful flight from Toulon….I think, just in this bad state of our affairs, we are doubly bound to show ourselves at court…."

The Toulon affair, to which Burke refers, began in August 1793 when Toulon was taken by the Bourbons and occupied by British and Spanish military forces. After several attempts by the French to take back the city, a young artillery officer, Captain Napoleone Buonaparte, planned and carried out an attack that retook the city and harbor for the French by December 19. The British fleet, commanded by Admiral Lord Hood, was forced to retreat and leave. Buonaparte was promoted to General of Brigade.

Eden, Anthony (1897-1977) British Foreign Secretary (1935-38, 40-45, 51-55) and Prime Minister (1955-57). Typed Letter Signed ("Anthony") with holograph greeting, closing, and one sentence, on personal letterhead, Fyfield Manor, Pewsey, April 20, 1961, one page, quarto. Three days after President Kennedy launched the diastrous Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba, the former British prime minister writes to Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook. In part: "As I told Junor, I do not at the moment want to say anything about the Cuban affair, but if I do I will contact him and…he can decide whether he thinks it useful or not. / My own fear is that the Americans have launched their partisans in insufficient numbers and with insufficient power. They may be faced with a choice of backing them with American forces or letting them fall. As they have only eighty miles of sea to cover and not a thousand, as we had at Suez from Malta, they ought not to have under-estimated the job they have to do, and Kennedy ought to know that exiles are always optimistic. Maybe the Americans have calculated better than appears on the surface. I pray so…."

The Bay of Pigs Invasion was a foreign policy debacle for President Kennedy. Eden had his own foreign policy debacle in 1956 when Britain attempted (with France and Israel) to regain international control of the Suez Canal. Eden was forced to resign as prime minister. Excellent content.

Autograph Letter Signed ("Anthony"), on personal stationery, Broad Chalke, Salisbury, August 27, 1957, 4 pp, octavo. To Max Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook, discussing personal matters--his health, working on his memoirs, taxation questions, etc. Of great interest is his P.S. about U. S. policy toward Arabia and Egyptian President Nasser: "As to Arabia, I see that U.S. abstained at U.N. over Oman. I do not see how we can agree a common policy with them as long as backing sand is their basic Arabian policy. To try to lure Nasser away from the Russians as some suggest will not work; it is likely to make him only more attractive to Moscow. He will come our way if he has to, & if he can, which is highly doubtful. A." Political insight from the British prime minister, the same year he was forced to resign for trying to regain control of the Suez Canal after its nationalization by Egypt's President Nassar. Villa, Francisco "Pancho" (c. 1878-1923) Mexican revolutionary. Rare Typed Letter Signed ("Francisco Villa") on "Private Correspondence of the Governor of the State of Chihuahua" letterhead, Chihuahua, December 27, 1913, one page, quarto. Villa sends his autograph to a collector in Hackensack, New Jersey. The signature, which is lightly affected by one vertical fold, stretches some 4½ in. across. Accompanied by the original envelope and a couple of photos clipped from period newspapers.

Villa was and is something of a folk hero for many Mexicans, and, at the time of this letter, for many in the United State as well. He had made the transition from bandit to revolutionary when he and his men joined with Francisco Madero in 1910 against Mexican dictator Porfirio Diaz. Villa raised thousands of troops, including Americans, and after Madero's assassination, he remained in command of his División del Norte army against the 1913-14 Victoriana Huerta dictatorship. Based in Chichuahua, Villa ruled over northern Mexico as if it were his fiefdom, financing his army by stealing cattle and selling them north of the border for guns and ammunition. He issued his own money and ordered the execution of merchants who refused to take it. In Robin Hood fashion, he broke up vast land holdings of the local hacienda owners and divided them among the widows and orphans of his fallen troops. He is reputed to have married 26 times, without bothering to terminate any of the relationships. When the U.S. came out in support of Venustiano Carranza's presidency, Villa raided U.S. border towns, most notably Columbus, New Mexico, leading to two U.S. Army "punitive expeditions," neither of which was successful in capturing Villa. He laid down his arms in 1920, in exchange for thousands of acres of land in Durango. In 1923 he was gunned down by an unknown assassin.

(Zapata, Emiliano) Plan de Ayala. True copy of the famous "Plan of Ayala," Signed by Eufemio Zapata, Emiliano's blood brother and right-hand man, 3 pp, folio. Also signed by General José T. Ruiz and General Francisco Mendoza. The Plan of Ayala called for the seizure of all foreign-owned land, all land taken from villages, confiscation of one-third of all land held by "friendly" hacendados, and full confiscation of land owned by persons opposed to the Plan of Ayala. Emiliano Zapata had joined Francisco Madero's rebellion against the dictator, Porfirio Díaz, but by late fall of 1911, Zapata became disillusioned by Madero's slowness to move on land reform. The Plan de Ayala, written by a village schoolteacher named Otilio Montafio and published by Zapata on November 27, 1911, is still considered the most radical reform program in Mexican history. Emiliano Zapata's cry was "Land and Liberty!" He was one of the most radical and committed to social justice of all the revolutionary leaders; he was assassinated in 1919. Archivally matted with a limited edition reprint of a vintage photo of Emiliano, Eufemio and other "zapatistas," 9 x 13½ inches. A very important document.
